The Many Benefits Of Reading

St Augustine once said, "The world is like a book, those who do not travel have only read one page".

Very well said.

I suppose books on the other hand help us to see the world through many perspective. If one does not read a book, he or she would not have seen the world. Such a sad thing to be able to only see this life through one perspective.

So, what are the benefits of reading? Below are some of the reasons why you should read everyday. It does not matter whether it is a newspaper, a magazine or a book.

1. To Gain Knowledge

In the past, people tend to gain knowledge through wise sayings and word of mouth. That was before the written word was invented. Then came the alphabet and many other types of symbols and languages that were invented. Scribes will write down the things that they observed. Philosophers will write down their thoughts and thinking. Hence, knowledge and wisdom were passed down through the written word.

There are lots of garbage out there that is written.
But there are also lots of knowledge and wisdom that are being produced over the centuries.

Every year there are numerous informative and ground breaking books and reports that are being produced. They cover every imaginable field of interest that may add to your knowledge on the particular subject. Finding those books or articles will increase your knowledge in that area.

As they say....

Knowledge is power. If you don't read, you won't have that power.

2. To Gain Wisdom

Wisdom is very different from knowledge.

Knowledge is knowing a lot about something. Wisdom on the other hand is knowing the right thing to do and doing it.

Throughout history, there are so many people who have gone through the same situation that you have gone through. Fortunately many have written them down for us to read. Sometimes it is in the form of a self help book and sometimes in the form of a story. Whatever the format, these books help us to understand what those people did in the past and whether they encounter success or failure.

If they found success, we can follow the formula and perhaps achieve success ourselves. If on the other hand what they did encountered failure, we can use what they have learned to avoid doing the same mistakes. Wisdom is learning to do what works and avoiding the mistakes that other people do.

You do not need to go through everything yourself to gain wisdom. Sometimes its better to gain wisdom by reading what someone else had gone through. Save you lots of time and pain too!

3. For Entertainment

Young people nowadays think that the only way to entertain themselves is true a PSP, a tablet, a computer or Netflix. Technology has certain opened up many avenues of entertainment. Back in the good old days of no internet connection and no computers, we used books to entertain ourselves.

I remember the days where I would spend hours and hours reading a novel or catching a detective story. The novels not only kept me entertained but it opened my eyes to the many facets of life. Nothing beats the printed word. Today there are many movies that are based on an original novel or series of books. For instance the Harry Potter series. I have watched the movies as well as read the books.

For those of you Harry Potter fans, I bet you will agree with me that the books provide much more entertainment value than the movies. Somehow you can't capture the entire feel by just watching the movies. The books provide much more information, suspense and sparks our imagination.

Books despite being ancient still can entertain. Sometimes a novel can produce a life changing effect on us. Like the diaries of Anne Frank and To Kill A Mockingbird.
