A Visit To Bali, Travel Tips & Advice For The Aspiring Millionaire
I am in Bali now.
Sitting at a Starbucks in Discovery Mall, Kuta.
So my wife and I decided to visit Bali for a few days. Three days to be exact. How I wish we have booked to stay for at least a week. Well, since we are from Malaysia, that's ok. We can always come back here again since its just 3 hours flight from Kuala Lumpur. For those of you who are from another part of the world, like America or Europe, its best to stay here at least 2 weeks to soak in the culture, the food and just relax.

Flying High With Air Asia
My wife and I took a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Bali by Air Asia.
For those who are looking for a budget low cost air travel in South East Asia, Air Asia is the best. It's almost 10 years since I took a plane. I almost forgot how it feels when the plane takes off and lands. The last time I took a plane was when I traveled back from London to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Here's a tip: For those of you who like to have a Sim City look of buildings and cars and the land and sea, take the morning or afternoon flight. You will be able to see the beautiful island as you arrive. Not to mention the amazing views as you pass by the islands surrounding Indonesia and Malaysia.
Another tip: If your flight from another South East Asian City is less than 5 hours away, consider taking an early morning flight that leaves from about 6am to 8am. That way, you will reach Bali around noon and you still get half a day to explore the area around your hotel. We took a flight around 10 am as Kuala Lumpur is just 3 hours flight from Bali. We arrived around noon and still have half a day to explore the area around Kuta Beach.

The Place To Train You To Spend Like A Billionaire
How do billionaires spend their money?
By the hundred of thousands and millions in a single day!
You get to experience how billionaires spend money when you are in Bali. Of course, we all know that the Indonesian Rupiah is in the thousands. But when you are in Bali, you get a feel of how it means to spend big money.
Anyway,
1 USD = 13,500 Rupiah.
So you need not worry too much about a meal that costs 150k.

How Much To Expect To Pay For Common Things In Bali
I went to Bali without doing much research on the amount of money you need to pay for food and services.
But one thing I do know is to compare the price.
You see, the beautiful thing about products and services is that they can be of the same quality but they are often offered at different prices by different vendors. While it may seem scary to have wildly different prices, they allow you to gauge how much that is overpriced.
For example, a 60 min body massage can range from 60,000 Rupiah to 300,000 Rupiah. It depends on the shop and where you get it from. It is double the price in Hotels and Airports but if it is an establishment on the main road of Kuta, then it is cheaper. The lesson here is to shop around and compare the price and don't decide on a spa just by visiting 2 or 3 shops. Look around at 4-5 spas and you will spot the big difference in price.
I chose the 60 min body massage that costs 60,000 and it was good enough. I did a 2 hour body massage at another shop that comes with scrub and a bath in the tub with roses but it was not as good as I expected. It cost me 200,000 Rupiah.
I could have done a 2 hour body massage for 120,000 Rupiah at the first shop.
I have tried many things in Bali and here is a summary of the price that you should expect to pay. Anything below that would be of inferior quality and anything way above it may be a rip off:

- Local food at a local stall (50k to 120k) per person
- Local food at hotel restaurant (80k to 200k) per person
- Western food (100k to 200k) per person
- Soft drinks at local 7-Eleven (6500 to 8000) per can
- Soft drinks at restaurants (10k to 15k)
- Starbucks costs about the same as most other place. Expect to pay 50k to 75k per cup of your favorite coffee
- I heard a sim card for local internet costs 50k for 4-5GB of data per month.
- Taxi ride (short distances 30k to 50k), a 20 min ride may cost up to 100k to 150k
- Whole day rental of a car with driver to take you around Bali for 8 to 10 hours (600k to 800k)
- A good hotel with air con room and swimming pool and good services (500k to 700k per day)
How Much Should You Pay For Souvenirs?
As you walk along the roads at tourist areas, you will see all kinds of stalls selling all kinds of local souvenirs which you might want to buy. It is a good idea to get some of these stuff to give it to your family and friends. People always appreciate a local souvenir which you brought for them. Makes them feel you remember them.
There are 2 places to get souvenirs. The first are local stalls by the road. The second ones are the more established shops that are in the malls or in their own shops elsewhere in Bali.
For the stalls on the road, when you are interested in an item, the proprietor will be very quick to come up to you and ask you what you want. When you tell them you are interested in a souvenir, they will offer you a price. Let's say 100,000 Rupiah.
From my experience, you really need to haggle over the price. If you pay the first amount the owner mentions, then you are probably paying double or triple of what they are willing to sell to you.
Always aim for a 50% reduction in price. But you must definitely get at least a 30% discount from the original price. Sometimes you might even get a 70% reduction in price.
When they mention a price, tell them it is too expensive. Strangely, they will often ask you back how much you are willing to pay. That is the moment when the haggling begins. The smaller the item, like key chains, the more discount you should get. The bigger items like shirts, bags and handmade stuff are much more difficult to get more than a 50% discount.
Anyway, my advice is this.
If you are spending more than a week in Bali, don't be too quick to buy any souvenir. Walk around and ask the prices and learn to haggle. After the 3rd day, you will get an idea of how low the merchant is willing to go for a particular item. Then when you are about to leave Bali, perhaps the second last day, go and buy the souvenir you want.
Settle at or near the price where you know is appropriate.
Don't be too stingy.
Remember, the locals need to make a living too. My wife told me that one of the locals told her it costs about $10,000 USD per year to rent a small stall along the road at Kuta Beach. Sometimes, its just not worth haggling over 20k to 30k because in USD its just $1 or $2. Do your part to help the locals make a living.
Now for the shops at malls and their own shops elsewhere.
These will cost a lot more then the local stalls. You might not be able to haggle over the price at malls. In home based shops, you can bargain over the price but my guide told me you shouldn't expect to get too much discount as the quality of their products are way better than those you find at local stalls.
I guess a 10% to 20% discount is possible in a home based shop.

The Best Souvenirs To Get As Gifts
Sometimes the best souvenirs you can get for your loved ones and friends are not the expensive ones. From experience, most gifts that you give to your friends will be lost somewhere within a day or two. But at least they will remember that you thought about them when you bought these gifts.
Popular stuff that people buy back include paintings, batik, key chains etc.
But I have a suggestion for you. I think they are the best and they are cheap and affordable too! The most important thing is that people will most likely keep them for years and years without losing it.
What is the best souvenir you can get for someone?
Answer: Fridge Magnet

Answer: Fridge Magnet
The picture above is a snap of my mum's fridge.
She has been to many places and I have bought her many things from other places but somehow all those other gifts have been lost. They are perhaps somewhere in the house but its really hard to find. But fridge magnets tend to stay put in one place and your friends won't lose them. They stay at the fridge for years. Sometimes for decades. Even if they change a fridge, people tend to transfer those magnets to the new fridge.

Hire A Local Car For Day Trips
The best way to experience Bali is to hire a car with a local driver.
They cost around 600,000 to about 800,000 Rupiah a day. Why do you want a local to drive you around Bali? Well, the best locations and travel destinations and local attractions are best known by a local.
Besides that, they can tell you a lot about the local culture, customs and many stories. Don't worry about their English. Most Balinese are quite fluent in English. They even speak a few common words of other languages.
Our guide Putu has been very helpful in helping us to understand Bali a bit more. There is nothing that beats first hand experience from a local. You can get all of these cheaply by hiring a car with a local driver for a day.
Where can you get them?
You can get one of the cars the moment you leave your plane. There are many locals who will be selling you their services at the airport. If you did not manage to get one, then you can certainly get one from the hotel. Some of them wait outside the hotel just to offer you their services. If you still can't get one, then tell the lobby receptionist and they will gladly find someone who will take you around Bali.
Traffic in Bali's road are less congested in the morning.
But as afternoon comes, the traffic gets heavier till the evening. So, it is important for you to start early in the day if you want to go to many destinations. 8.30 am or 9 am will be fine.

Bali Weather, Temperature And Climate
Since Bali is around the Equator, there is not much difference from the other cities in South East Asia.
The temperature is about 26 Celsius to 30 Celsius. (78 F to 86F).
In the few days that we were at Bali, there was little rain. Its quite sunny all day and perfect for an outdoor trip. Since the sun is always out, it can get pretty hot during the afternoons. So, remember to drink enough water. You can easily get bottled water from the hotels and local 7 Elevens.
Also, remember to put on Sun Cream.
Even if you are not swimming, it is a good idea to put on sun cream as the blazing hot sun will scorch your face and skin.
One thing that surprised me is how early the sun sets in Bali.
Back in Kuala Lumpur, the sun sets around 7 pm and it gets dark at 8 pm. In Bali, it gets dark at 6.30 pm. The local time is the same as ours in Kuala Lumpur. There is no time difference but when it got dark, my wife and I thought it is already 8 pm. When we check our smart phones, we realize it is only 6.30 pm.
So, for those of you who are planning day trips, make sure you get out early and come back the hotel by around 5 pm if you want to have a dip in the pool.

The Place Where One Night's Stay Cost 500,000
Honestly, a good hotel costs at least 500,000 to 1 million.
But don't worry. It is in Indonesian Rupiah.
1 USD = 13,500 Rupiah
My wife and I stayed at The Vira Bali. We book it through a deal in AirAsia as I did not want the problem of booking a flight and then flicking through hotels. Altogether, the flight and 2 nights stay in the hotel costs about $500 USD. I think the cost of the hotel itself would be about $150 USD for two nights.
When I booked the hotel, I chose it because it was affordable as well as near The beach.
Little did I know that it is the second most booked hotel in Kuta, Bali. It also has a good rating and won many awards from the likes such as Tripadvisor, Booking.com, etc, etc. I can't remember the exact awards or companies that gave them but you can see a ton of them displayed at the lobby.
Upon arriving, we were given a local drink and a dessert.
The hotel employees were extremely friendly and helpful. Whenever we passed any one of them, they will greet us with smiles and words like hello, good morning.
The location of the hotel is very near Kuta Beach and it is located at the main tourist road. The main tourist area is Kuta, which is just a slow walk all along the main road. There are two shopping malls nearby. One directly opposite our hotel, which has a Starbucks and one which is 10 min walk ahead.
If you really want to be treated like a billionaire or millionaire and be pampered, I highly recommend this hotel. THE VIRA BALI. You can double check the rating and reviews at booking.com or tripadvisor and you will see that they are very well rated.
Below are some pictures of the hotel we stayed in.

Here's a summary of Hotel Vira Bali that we stayed in:
They do have free wifi and have 5 wifi spots you can connect to but the connection is a bit slow. You can still access webpages but you definitely can't stream YouTube videos there. Perhaps the management should upgrade the connection speed. There is free wifi at the international airport and it is faster than the hotel's.
- It is very near to Kuta Beach and the Ngurah Rai international airport
- The hotel provides free shuttle service to and from the airport
- Great poolside view from every room
- Located at the main tourist road in Bali
- Very friendly staff and great service
- Highly rated on travel sites such as Tripadvisor
- There's a great restaurant called Mozarella a stone throw away from this hotel
- A shopping mall is located opposite the mall called Lippo Mall
- There's a Starbucks opposite the mall for those of you who miss your favorite coffee

Money Changers
There is no need to worry about money changers when you are in Bali.
In fact you can leave your country without a single Indonesian Rupiah. Just bring your home currency and you can exchange them at the many money changers in Bali. When I walk along the main tourist road, Jalan Kartika Plaza, I was surprised by the number of money changers. There must be hundreds of them on the same road.
Some are in buildings and are definitely authorized. But there are many that are just small huts by the road side. I wonder if they are even licensed or authorized. Anyway, our local driver told us to go to the established ones inside malls or buildings since there are many problems associated with money changers by the roadside.
The money changers in Bali accept the major currencies and many other currencies as well. USD, GBP, Malaysian Ringgit and so many others can be easily converted to the local currency.

Massage & Spa
One thing you should definitely experience in Bali is the massage and spa.
If you are price conscious, I recommend that you get a massage outside hotels. There are shops along tourist roads that offer 1 hour foot massages and body massages from 60,000 to 150,000 Rupiah depending on the package. From my experience, the 60,000 one is good enough.
Massages and spa in hotels are much more expensive.
They often come at double or triple the price you find at outside shops. If you want a more pleasant environment and quieter atmosphere and you don't mind the steep price, then by all means head towards your own hotel's spa.
When is the best time to do a massage or spa?
I think the best time would be after a long day's exploration and walk. When you are so tired, you might want to head to a spa to relax and unwind. The peak time for massages in Bali's shops are around 8.30 pm to 10.00 pm. At these times, you will often see the shops full of tourists who want to relax.
Most shops in Bali closes around 11 pm.
My wife and I love massage and spa. When we were in Bali, we visited spas everyday. Just the perfect way to relax after a long day's walk.

Tegalalang Rice Terrace
The Tegalalang Rice Terrace in Ubud is a very popular tourist destination.
You should try and visit this site if you happen to be in Ubud. Ubud is about 1 and a half hours away from Kuta. The layers of rice terrace is a beautiful sight to behold. There are many restaurants there where you can have lunch and just slowly soak in the scenery.
We had our lunch at one of the restaurants there and the food is good. The experience is something that you should try.

Monkey Forest Ubud
With more than 600 monkeys, this monkey forest is a place where you can see...
well, lots and lots of monkey.
The entrance fee is 40,000 Rupiah per adult.

Some monkeys here are very tame. They will climb behind your back. You can give them bananas to eat which you can buy for 50,000 Rupiah from the vendors there. A bit expensive.
Some monkeys are very wild and we witness a monkey fight that day. Stay away from these. You don't need to worry too much about being attacked by monkeys as there are many local workers there who help keep the peace.

Spend At Least A Week There
One of the things I wish we had done is to stay there for at least a week.
Although Bali is an island, it is a huge island. My guide told me it takes about 24 hours to travel by car around the whole island. The main places where tourist congregate are the south of the island in Kuta. The next popular place is Ubud near the centre of the island.
If you have limited time, then at least visit these two places.
I really recommend that you stay there at least a week. Perhaps 2 weeks might be best to experience all that the island has to offer. With that amount of time you can see so many other stuff like:
Bali is a place where you can relax and take things slow. It is a place to spend time with your spouse. It is a place to rekindle romance. It is a place to recharge yourself. Take the time to enjoy and experience Bali. Who knows when you come home, you will come up with the next big IDEA which will turn you into a millionaire or billionaire!
